Match report
• Excellent Stewarts Melville juniors team showcases future stars.
• South fielding drills pay off with two catches and two run outs.
• South batting recovers from 3-6 to a more respectable 75.
Despite a sudden downpour 15 minutes before the start of the match, Sunday saw an excellent development match in the sun. Stewarts Melville’s team showcased plenty of promising juniors, whilst the South had an excellent mix of players throughout the club structure.
With Stewarts Melville opening the batting, Dan Hackney and Jack McLuckie kept it tight for the first few overs. Jack claimed a wicket, a catch (off of Dan’s accurate spin bowling) and a run out before the opposition dug in. South let coach M Macoll continue after reversing an edged lbw decision before Dan claimed his second wicket, of the impressive J Wilson, with another lbw. An excellent battle ensued, with accurate bowling from Kesh Bhatnagar and Martin Richardson matched by resistant batting from Macoll and R Harrison. After Macoll retired, Kesh was finally rewarded with two wickets, before a Rod Hunt lbw and a run out completed the innings.
We don’t talk about what happened next. Some say that the first 6 South batters, including this author, were bowled out for ducks. Others say this is a figment of the imagination and could never have possibly happened. Either way, some excellent batting from Kesh, Dharmesh “Geoffrey Boycott” Parekh and David Richardson saved face, with the final total of 75 a fair return after some excellent accurate bowling from the Stewarts Melville youngsters, including 3 wickets for Wilson.
All in all, a good day out. Stewarts clearly have some really talented players being carefully nurtured through the ranks, and we look forward to seeing how they develop over the next few years. I’m sure one will be leading Scotland to a world cup victory within the next decade or two!
