Kirk Brae CC v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI on Wed 07 Aug 2024 at 18:00
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report TERRY NEWCOMBE TROPHY FINAL:

On a blustery evening in Stockbridge, George lost the toss and Kirk Brae chose to bat first on a typically good Newfield wicket, perhaps conscious that the light might fade as the evening went on.

Rudy and Dipen took the new ball for Inch Park (the 2s), and they took the opening two wickets. Dipen's off-spin bowled the Kirk Brae number two through the gate before Rudy drew an outside edge from the other opener and Charlie gobbled it up behind the stumps.

Kirk Brae recovered from that wobble to reach 60-2 after nine overs, but a wonderful spell of bowling from Sriram swung the momentum back towards Inch Park. Ghaffar was clean bowled and Sadiq then fended the next delivery to Nipun at slip, who took a sharp catch down low. In his next over, Sri then removed the opposition captain Singh - again clean bowled - to reduce them to 70-5 in the 11th over.

The Double Hedges outfit scrambled their way to a competitive total of 125, thanks to a partnership of 52 between Khan and Ahmed. Still, it felt like we were on top at the halfway stage, especially given a similar Inch Park side had posted well over 200 at the same venue earlier in the competition.

It was an excellent bowling and fielding effort right throughout the 20 overs, more so when you factor in the true nature of the pitch and the fast outfield. A real highlight was a remarkable piece of athleticism from Oliver in the final over which prevented a seemingly certain boundary.

In reply, George and Harry took the score to 29-0 after four overs, running well between the wickets and punishing any loose deliveries. However, George and Dean both fell in the space of three balls to send a few nerves through the rest of the batting lineup.

Harry remained though and scored all around the ground in a blistering 51 off just 26 balls, with 50 of those coming in boundaries. It was a knock that broke the back of the chase and he was deservedly named Player of the Match after the game.

Important contributions from Nipun, Dipen and Rudy - who scored the winning runs down the ground - guided Inch Park home with 12 balls to spare.
