Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost By 3 wickets
Match report
The 5s welcomed TPV6s for the first game on the new arti. With thundery showers forecast prospects for a full day’s play looked unlikely, but as always Scottish weather surprised us all and we managed to play a full game. We lost the toss and were put in to bat. Martin got a really good ball, a fast inswinging Yorker and was bowled in the first over. Gordon was in next and him and Dharmesh steadily scored before Gordon was run out for 38. Dharmesh was out next for 19, and two more wickets fell quickly (Fahad for 8 and Shaman for 2), leaving the score at 94-5, in the 29th over and we looked like we weren’t going to post a defendable score, but some solid hitting and quick running by Graham (55no) and Sabir (38no) saw us reach 176-5.
TPV started the chase quickly and looked comfortable, reaching 61-0 from the first 10 overs. We were in need of a wicket which was delivered by Sabir, with a good catch by Shaman, and then another quickly followed, a good ball by Phil getting the batsman lbw, leaving TPV on 77-2, after 12 overs. TPV rebuilt before losing two more wickets, a lbw for Sabir and a caught behind for Martin Ali, and they were 110-4 at the drinks break. We knew we had to try to slow down the run rate to try and put some pressure on the batters, and good fielding, particularly by Fahad and some tight bowling by Dharmesh and Mo, did that in the next 10 overs, as we took 1 wicket, and only gave away 26 runs. At 30 overs the odds were still in their favour, but they tilted back in our favour as we took 2 more wickets, a tricky catch by Sid and a C&B by Mo, for 11 runs in the next four overs, and they were 148-7 after 34 overs, and we had a sniff of a chance. But some hard hitting by their batsmen saw them home by 3 wickets in the 37th over. We had put up a good fight but just didn’t quite have enough runs. We collected 9 bonus points, and with a bit more luck could have won as they had numerous streaky edged shots which just missed our fielders.
The game was played in a great spirit by both sides despite the barracking of some of our bowlers by our fielders (yes, Graham, I mean you), and the new arti performed really well.
