Edinburgh South Cricket Club 5th XI v Drummond Trinity 5ths on Sun 31 May 2026 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
The game against DT5s will certainly go down as one of the most memorable ones with slips, collisions, a trip to A&E for the DT vice captain, the youngest (probably) ESCC player to take 4 wickets in an adult league game and Graham continuing his majestic form with his 4th consecutive league 50 (is that another club record?) saw the 5s get a comfortable win, that takes them one step closer to the target of 4 wins, which will see them stay in the division.
The day started badly, with DT winning the toss and deciding to bat. However fortune favoured us as their best batsman slipped in the 1st over without facing a ball when turned back going for a quick single and he was run out by Sidh and Phil. Phil (5-0-23-2) and Krish ( 8-0-37-4) both bowled tidily but the DT batters only knew one way to play, have a swing or miss or get out. Their aggressive approach saw 4 wickets fall quickly and they were in trouble at 29-4. However they rebuilt and carried on their aggressive approach, with runs being scored quickly but wickets also falling with Kesh (6-1-33-1) and Pete ( 5-0-36-1) picking up a wicket apiece. At 20 overs DT were 103-6 and with one of their batsmen well set, looked like they were on for a big score. Sidh ( 4-0-23-0) and Kesh continued after the break and we were struggling for a breakthrough before an inspired piece of decision making by Martin and Dharmesh, saw them bring Krish back on and he duly delivered, taking 3 wickets in his final over; caught, bowled and lbw and DT were 9 down. Martin (2.3-0-8-1) and Dharmesh (2-0-7-0) helped slow the run rate down and they were finally bowled out for 168. The catching was good, with 5 catches taken by Dan, Dharmesh, Fahad, Martin and Shaman, and the fielding was committed, as demonstrated by Dharmesh and Martin (the two oldest players in the team) colliding in to each other when trying to stop a boundary - any suggestion that Dharmesh was trying to nobble Martin and take on the captaincy is entirely spurious. Thankfully no lasting damage was done.
Our innings started badly with Dharmesh (1), tickling one to the keeper in the 3rd over, but that brought in Graham (84no) , who looked comfortable throughout his innings. Kesh (10) and Graham batted sensibly before Kesh cut one to gully. Fahad (5) was in next, but was unlucky to be run out by a direct hit, and that saw us in a bit of trouble, at 48-3, but Graham and Shaman (15) settled things down. There was a close call when Shaman was nearly run out but that saw the DT vice captain having to go to A&E (thanks to Gordon B, who had come down to watch, for taking him) as he suffered a bad cut on his finger trying to run Shaman out. It looked like fortune was favouring us, as he was one of their key bowlers. DT had a substitute who replaced the vice captain but he couldn’t bowl, which meant they had to use people who weren’t regular bowlers. Graham and Shaman continued to score steadily and they put on 55 before Shaman mistimed a sweep (who would have guessed that Shaman would be out sweeping?) and Dan was in next. He struck a few lusty blows before being caught and bowled when on 14, by one that stuck a bit on the pitch. Peter (10no) was in next and he and Graham saw us home in the 29th over.
It was certainly an eventful day, and another win to the total that saw us move to 5th in the table and a step closer to safety. Next week we play Grange, the runaway leaders, so a very hard match Is expected but hopefully we can repeat the heroics of last year and win on the last ball.
