Largo 4ths v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 07 May 2011 at 1300
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 72 runs

Match report Edinburgh South CC's Third XI made their league debut in auspicious fashion with a comprehensive victory over Largo Fourths. At the cold, showery but beautiful ground next to the Old Course at St. Andrews, Pete Kingsley won the toss and elected to bat on an astroturf wicket. Although Kingsley departed cheaply in the third over, Will and Peter Fyfe saw off the opening bowlers, both of whom are promising products of Largo's impressive youth system.

The meat of Edinburgh South's innings came from an excellent 64 from Samab, who hit six fours and three huge sixes, his powerful hitting negating an extremely slow uncut outfield. He added 70 with Vishnu, who played sensibly with Samab at first, later adding a six of his own after his partner departed.

ESCC 3rd's total of 161 was always going to be a stiff target on a slow outfield, and so it proved. Vishnu (6-2-9-2), in such good form with the ball in the pre-season friendlies, continued to bowl with great economy and threat, removing two top order batsmen. Given how difficult Largo's slow bowlers had been to score from, Kingsley opted to open the bowling with debutant spinner Kashif Awan at the other end. Kashif's superb spell (8-4-9-1) flummoxed the Largo batsmen with skillful use of flight, his economy building great pressure. Eric Foggitt (2/17) exploited that pressure as Largo wickets continued to tumble.

At this point, the light drizzle became more steady, and Kingsley switched to Samab's off-spin to ensure 20 overs were completed - the point at a result is guaranteed. By the time Samab's lethal quicker ball cleaned up Ritchie, Largo were in pieces at 31/7. Despite some lusty blows from Blake, the result was now beyond doubt. Edinburgh South could be proud that their bowlers we backed up by a good fielding display, the highlights be three catches for debutant Ayyapan, a runout shared by Paul and Will, and best of all, a superb catch at fly-slip by Mark Kirby.

A less sporting club may have tried to avoid completing the match, but Largo deserve great credit for continuing in less than ideal conditions, setting a fine example of sportsmanship to their young players. By the time the rain became to heavy to continue, Largo were 69/8. When the adjusted scores were calculated, an excellent result for Edinburgh South was confirmed.
