Edinburgh South Cricket Club 1st XI v Clackmannon County CC on Sat 05 May 2012 at 13:00
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 21 runs

Match report After some controversy on whether the game should go ahead - the East League ruled we should continue if the opposition wished to play. In the end, the pitch was bad, but not as bad as anticipated. However, it caused the bowlers delivery stride to sink, and the damage no doubt means that remedial work will be required on the square. A real setback in that sense. Having said that, it was a great game of cricket to play in - competitive to the end.

Clackmannon County batted first, after what was a good toss to win on a difficult wicket. Initially they struggled for runs, until number for Anthony Hullatt got going. A mixture of patience on a tough pitch, some very nice shots and a little bit of luck got him to a well compiled 66 which was undoubtedly worth 100 on a normal cricket wicket. Some lusty blows from the tail resulted in a score of 157 - an above par total on the wicket. The fielding from South was excellent, and some of the bowling performances also very good - Abhishek and Matthew the pick of the bowlers, with the latter bowling a great length in both spells. Most impressively he bowled to the captain's plan, despite going for runs doing so, and his patience and accuracy earnt a well deserved key wicket.

The top order batting was slightly less impressive. Loose shots from a couple of the top order, combined with a few good balls meant we were always behind the chase at 28-3 then 47-4. Ben batted well on debut with some sensible batting. A glimmer of hope at the end when Shekar came to the crease and showed a level head - picking the balls to hit and block in a controlled run chase. Batting is just as much in the head as it is talent, and Shekar showed he's got a lot about him in his first league game for the 1s as he closed in on the runs. A slightly dubious LBW decision to the unlucky Sakti (thanks Gus!) swung the game back again with us needing just 30 from the last 6 overs.

Shekar hauled out to long on, which was the beginning of the end.

Lots to be pleased with - some good fielding and patient bowling. The middle to lower order contributed really well. To make the game so close having failed in the top order is a good sign in defeat. Runs at the top of the order next week should make us a tough proposition to beat.

Great effort guys. Man of the match - Shekar for a mature, controlled innings that nearly won us the match.

D.O.T.W - Chapman - for holing out a pie to the only fielder in the deep!
