Stand-in captain Gerry called tails, only to find that the coin had flipped, so to speak, since his long past previous successes with that call. Not only that, but worms have turned, and many moons have come and gone. After all, it is a young man’s world. One such, Shane Wilcock, made his debut for the club, and insisted he had not played cricket for several years. He then proceeded to compile a good looking 29 batting at number three. Nobody else reached double figures, though Gus and Gerry managed a partnership of 20, the best of the innings, for the 8th wicket. However 97 all out never seemed enough against the undefeated league leaders.

So far this season, Watsonians 3rds is the only team with whom we have been able to play both home and away fixtures, due to the weather. Switching six bowlers around to try to take wickets seemed a good ploy, but the runs target was too low. As usual Daryll and Gus bowled well for two wickets each, but Jamie’s spell of nippy leg spin caught the eye. The same pair of Cousins, who are in fact father and son, have proved our undoing on each occasion. This time father Mike took centre stage, making 42 to steer his side home.

Two significant plus points must be mentioned. This was the first completed innings by any Edinburgh South team this year where all batsmen contributed; and, just as rare, the sun shone throughout. So this was as enjoyable a game to play as any five wicket defeat can be.
