Musselburgh CC v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 06 May 2012 at 13:00
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Although the pitch was much harder than yesterday's mudbath at the Inch, it's still early season so I was delighted to win the toss for the second time in the weekend and bowl first!
The team was made up of a mixture of 1st and 2nd XI players, so it was always going to be tough against a strong Musselburgh side. We all felt we were in with the best chance if we restricted them in the 1st innings.
Things started really well with Gus bowling his usual miserly stuff, going for just 11 runs from his 8 overs. Musselburgh tried to build partnerships on a tricky wickets, but every time they just started to build we seemed to take a wicket. Great bowling from all the guys - Abhishek being the pick of the bowlers for the second day running and Jamie Coard bowling brilliantly, going for just 15 runs from his 6 overs - a great return for a leg spinner on a cold day.
The fielding was also excellent, apart from one blemish from the skipper shelling a high one off Matthew, who couldn't really complain having dropped a really simple return catch off his own bowling that I would have undoubtedly took! ;-)
The run chase worked out perfectly. Abhi was sent in up top to get the run rate up, and take the pressure off the remaining batsmen - which is exactly what he did in a well compiled 28, including one huge six into the far stone wall off their opening quick. Matthew came to the crease, and having learnt from yesterday's innings started cautiously and played himself in. This allowed him to accelerate later in his innings, leaving him not out at the end having compiled an excellent 69 not out.
A great team performance all round guys. Thanks to all those who stepped up to play for the 1st XI, and didn't look in the least bit out of place. Bring on either Marchmont or Heriots 2s in the next round! ...
