Match report
Few present day cricketers were around in the original swing era. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgD-PBNyFrY But the metaphor was alive and well at Inverleith, as a stiff cold crosswind never relented, causing considerable movement at times across the artificial track. So it was that events unfolded, and we discovered – much to our surprise and relief – that an innings suffering an astounding collapse can win the day, so long as it is followed by one which disintegrates from the start.
ESCC3s were asked to bat. Calum (10) and Gerry (14) started very cautiously, accumulating 32 for the first wicket. True to form, Brendon then continued in last week’s vein to make our top score of 17 in no time. However, from a reasonable position at 57 for 1, even the extras virtually dried up, as the last nine wickets fell for just 7 runs, leaving us reeling on 64 all out. Even the arrival of debutant Sunil, complete with a small child in tow, and just in time to bat at number ten, failed to stop the rot. Little can be said to soften the disillusionment from last week’s enthusiastic comment about mature batting.
Captain Ian encouraged the troops to move smartly outside after tea to participate in an on field warm-up, but I’m afraid it took this old soldier a little longer to forsake the warmth and comfort of the pavilion. The ploy seemed to work though, because he held a catch in the second over, just before his hands lost feeling. This gave Ian Irving the first of four wickets in a remarkable spell of 6-4-2-4. He kept a fullish length just around off stump, and deserved this splendid return. Meanwhile Brendon’s three wickets at the other end reduced SMRH4s to 14 for 7. Around this stage, Sunil ‘s child demanded his full attention, so he left the field. SMRH4s’ captain very sportingly offered us a substitute fielder, but Ian declined. A brief flurry from their antipodean import ended as Calum’s shorter ball trapped him lbw on a soft part of his anatomy. Ross soon took the last two wickets, to complete the innings for 37.
A win is a win, but relief was the overriding feeling this time.
