Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI v Morton 3rds on Sat 27 Jul 2013 at 1300
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 43 runs (rain calculation)

Match report The 3rd XI made the short trip to Cavalry Park hoping to maintain our position at the top of division 9, whilst denting the hopes of 4th placed Morton.

With heavy rain forecast late in the afternoon, I was not too disappointed when Morton chose to bat first, in the hope we could force a result from the game. Brendon and Ross Byford opened the bowling, and the Morton openers seemed intent on protecting their stumps and little else. With pressure building as they limped to 20 off 11 overs, with only 10 off the bat, the introduction of Peter Russian brought instant reward as Calum, standing in as wicket keeper, took a sharp catch down the leg side. Brendon finished his 8 overs only conceding 8 runs, and young Richard Tresidder kept up the pressure with 2 maidens to start his spell.

Wickets started to fall, with Peter bowling his 8 overs straight through, for 22 runs, taking 4 wickets in total. On top of bowling well, he kept the pressure up by bowling his overs very quickly, which stopped any Morton batsman from settling, and also helped with our over rate which was crucial as we tried to get a result before the rain. Calum showed good form with the gloves by claiming 3 catches.

At 48/3 off 24, Morton needed to push on, and former Edinburgh South player Derek Myers came to the crease and showed good patience to top score with 37 for the visitors. A lack of support prevented him from taking too many chances, and he did well to keep the strike to protect his inexperienced tail. Great fielding by South also frustrated Morton, as several good shots were stopped athletically in the field, and the top fielding continued with Darren taking 3 slip catches, the first diving low to his right with one hand! Ross and Richard mopped up the tail with 2 wickets apiece, which were just reward for their excellent bowling.

After lunch, Calum and Brendon strode to the crease hoping to maintain their excellent opening partnership that currently averaged 145. Brendon decided to not let the bowlers settle, taking 9 off the 2nd over, and we were soon cruising along at 45 for 0 off 10 overs. As word reached us that a thunderstorm had interupted the 2s game in Peebles, eyes kept glancing to the skies, to see if we could get to 20 overs before the rain. When Morton made their first bowling change after 11 overs, Brendon again went on the attack, taking 14 off the bowlers first over.

Brendon brought up his 50 with a crunching pull shot for 4 that had flown past square leg before they had seen it, after only 12.2 overs, while his opening partner was on 9. While it was a good shot, and a nice way to bring up yet another 50, the fact he had lost the ball in the woods caused a little concern as the clouds were drawing in! With Morton struggling to find the ball, Darren continued his ball hawking, by strolling over and finding it within seconds to get the game back on. With us now well ahead of the rate, only the weather could stop us, and I think the subliminal messages I was sending got through as the big shots and scoring were reduced, which helped speed up the over rate. Only 18 runs came in the 6 overs before drinks, and this was exactly what was required to get us the win - 7 balls after drinks, the heavens opened, and we agreed to call it a day after 15 minutes, with us 43 runs ahead on the D/L calculator. Calum and brendon had done the job perfectly, and both deserved their not outs, with only a couple of tough chances offered.
