Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI v Murrayfield DAFS 3rds on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 9 runs

Match report A more normal summer day had replaced the heatwave – still comfortably warm, but with a noticeable breeze. Recent rain had done little to soften the playing conditions though. MDAFS3s won the toss and decided to bat, no doubt hoping to make a big score, then apply pressure in the second innings.

But it didn’t turn out quite like that. Such was the accuracy of our opening bowlers Kshitiz and Prabhneet that the first run off the bat only came in the seventh over. Kshitiz produced startling figures of 8-7-4-2, bowling both openers cheaply, but even that was scant reward for all his probing deliveries outside off stump. The next three batsmen scored over 50 runs between them, reviving MDAFS3s’ innings. At this point, Gerry floated one up to Mehta, whose optimistic swipe missed the ball completely. It pitched by his feet, only to bounce over middle stump. But keeper for the day, Karamjit, gleefully stumped him, as the unfortunate batsman ended in a sitting position some distance out of his ground. Gerry then bowled four more victims, each failing to allow for the breeze taking the ball in “through the gate”, completing his first five wicket haul for eight years. Young Fahad meantime bowled top scorer Ketinedi for 29. Vinay and Keshav finished the innings, each wasting little time in inducing good outfield catches by Graham and Prabhneet respectively. MDAFS3s’ 89 gave ESCC2s hope of beating a modest total. (Special thanks to Bill for coming down to score for the first innings of the match, despite mobility problems as he waits for a hip operation.)

After our al fresco tea – thanks, Graham - ESCC2s quickly lost Keshav, but built steadily thereafter, through useful contributions from Jeremy, Karamjit, Fahad and Peter. In the event, Fahad’s 21 turned out to be our top score, and his positive batting was impressive in one so young. A snapshot of the proceedings then would have shown ESCC2s in hopeful mood, over half way to the target, and well ahead of the required rate, albeit with three or four wickets down. Our good-natured opponent Mr Towns had other ideas though, already into what turned out to be his match winning spell of 6.2-4-10-6. As our eighth wicket fell, Prabhneet – on his 17th birthday - was left with the character-building, but strange and unenviable task of conspiring with the tail (Gerry and Julian, each of whom was pretty old before Prabhneet was born) to score another dozen or so runs for victory. On paper, so to speak, this should have been achievable, because there were plenty of overs left, and MDAFS3s had now brought the fielders in to surround the batsmen. A couple of well struck fours and a few scrambled runs would do the job. In reality though, Prabhneet’s defiant 1 not out monopolised the remaining ESCC2s effort, as we sunk to a 9 run defeat.

Low scoring games sometimes produce many fluctuations of fortune, and this was a case in point. Although we lost this time, everyone enjoyed a good sporting contest.
