RHC 3rds v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 25 Aug 2018 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 153 runs

Match report This last ESCC2s match of 2018 was played in pleasant breezy conditions at Gyle Park.

Call offs in the 1sts deprived us of stalwarts Ian Ross and Kshitiz Tiwari, but equally this gave Harry Barratt his first go at captaincy in a senior game, happily under the watchful eye of dad Charlie. Two more school boys, Fahad and Charlie (MacLeod), added to the pool of young promise, but a disproportionately heavy weight of past experience, aka fading potential, more than countered that.

Harry won the toss and decided we would bowl first. He and Rahul opened the attack, each producing some excellent efforts, with Rahul making the early breakthrough. RHC3s’ innings built carefully at first, but the second wicket partnership progressively prospered as eight bowlers took their turns. It was good to see the burden shared, with all the youngsters contributing enthusiastically, though without success. A switch of keeper at the drinks interval saw Murdo MacLeod give Charlie Barratt a chance to bowl. His pace certainly injected spice to proceedings, but various flying edges eluded the fielders. Gerry got lucky, disposing of both Ali (76) and Kay (38) in his second over. Peter’s sharp catch at point gave Rahul a second wicket late on, but the final score of 180 for 4 was always going to be quite a challenging target.

After a very welcome tea, the tide of fortune turned further notches against ESCC2s, as Messrs Goodall and Brunton set about demolishing our hopes. The latter generated more pace than most in Division 6, but it was Goodall who achieved five wickets, with three caught and bowled and two lbws. In contrast to the first innings, RHC3s held all their chances, which always improves morale in a side. It took our joint top scorers, Harry and Peter, with 5 each – both of whom succumbed to very good catches - to match the 10 extras, and our sorry total of 27 all out tells its own tale. However Julian not only managed to score 100% of the tenth wicket partnership - of 1 - with Gerry, but together they also raised the bar on their previous record – that is unless you know better! - for the aggregate age of the participants in the tenth, or possibly any, wicket partnership in ESCC’s history once more, now to well over 157 years.

Unfortunately the 2018 season will not go down as ESCC’s finest, but hope springs eternal. Here’s to better results in 2019.
