Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI v Broomhall 2 on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
It is often unwise, in life as well as in cricket, to rely too much on the warm glow of recent success to get you through your next contest. From my vantage point, at least twice the age of anyone else in ESCC2s team, and after a particularly welcome surprise win over the joint league toppers last week, I admit that I looked at our team list for this fixture, and thought that our very promising bunch – on paper – should be capable of taking care of our opponents’ challenge. After all, we had home advantage, whatever that is, and Broomhall2s were propping up the league. It was not to be, though.
Broomhall2s won the toss, and asked us to bat. It was great to welcome Will George back amongst us after several years away, and he opened with Graham. Will hit the second ball of the innings for a lofted boundary, and quickly scored 10. But soon both openers were out, each succumbing to variable bounce on the arti to fall lbw. Fahad (8) and Brandon (10) proceeded brightly, taking ESCC2s on to 37 in the eighth over. However we lost three wickets on that score – 37 for 5. Umer top scored with 12, and he and Daniel added another 15 with an assortment of successful shots, but after that ESCC2s’ effort slid into a seemingly inevitable ignominious collapse - 59 all out.
Prabhneet and Umer bowled good lines at the Broomhall2s openers, and Umer took the first wicket in his second over. This brought our old adversary Mike Warren to the middle. He soon took full advantage of any wayward bowling, and when captain Phil Ward (9) got out to a sharp catch behind the stumps by Will off Abhay’s second ball, the score was 39 for 2. Owen, Gerry and Brandon all had short bowling spells towards the end, but the task was beyond us, as Euen Breen (13*) joined Mike Warren (23*) to make short work of Broomhall2s’ eight wicket win.
This was Umer’s first game for us, and he looks a useful find. Brandon’s flighty leg spin bowling also deserves a longer airing.
