Match report
Rain had been plentiful during the week leading up to this match and with our covers still awaiting repair this made for a tricky damp pitch and a much slower outfield than had been seen during a dry sunny April. Accordingly, Eoghan put Stewart's Melville in when he won the toss. Daniel opened with a maiden and bowled Shah, batting at 2 for the visitors, with the second ball of his second over. Farhan, coming on as first change, had two l.b.w. shouts answered in his favour and George took a good catch at mid-wicket to make the visitors 80 for 4 off 24.3 overs. With their No. 4, Mark Burgess looking well settled at the crease Stew-Mel would have expected to make a score of 140 or 150. However, the introduction of Vipin to the attack proved to be a masterstroke as he bowled Burgess with his first ball (86/5 from 27.1). With the first ball of his second over he struck again when Eoghan repeated the one-handed left-handed grab he had made at Goldenacre last year and he next bowled the No. 7 bat with the fourth ball of his third over and at this stage was still to give away a run. Having yielded up a single from the third ball of his fourth over Vipin took a smart caught and bowled with his next delivery and completed his five-wicket haul for the loss of 4 runs when the skipper took his second catch of the afternoon when clinging on to an attempted big hit on the long-on boundary. Farhan then returned to the attack to take the final wicket by bowling the captain batting at eleven.
There were high hopes of the visitor's total of 109 but these did not work out. Dean and Nab looked comfortable enough in adding 22 for the third wicket before the latter was bowled but Dean's dismissal, questionably l.bw. to Stew-Mel's good young slow left armer, Ben Jamieson, was probably crucial. This was followed by the fall of a cluster of wickets which left us on 57 for 7 from 21.1 overs. Eoghan was next to go with our score on 73 before a partnership of 26 between Daniel and Kiran took us close but not close enough.
Verdict: this was certainly one that got away. Faced with a similar situation again and bearing in mind that there were still 7.1 overs remaining when our last wicket fell, your correspondent hopes that the batsmen at the wicket would decide to play within their own comfort zone by, to use a famous old phrase, "getting them in singles".
For the record, our innings included 5 penalty runs when a throw-in from the field hit the bowler's sweater which was lying behind the stumps.
