Edinburgh South Cricket Club 1st XI v Grange 3rds on Sat 19 Jun 2021 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 5 runs

Match report This match proved once again the unpredictability of cricket. A week earlier we had comfortably defeated a team who were unbeaten at the top of the league but in this match we played out a nail biter with a side in the lower region of the Division 2 table.
Morning rain had fallen on the uncovered pitch so it was inevitable that the team winning the toss would take to the field. The visiting skipper called correctly and so we were batting. Charanjit and George both fell early which made us 14 for 2 after 5.4 overs. Dean and Nab improved our position with a stand of 39, the highest of the innings, in almost 10 overs for the third wicket. The stand came either side of a 32 minute rain break and although we succeded in getting cover sheets on some further rain had fallen on the wicket making batting even more difficult than it had been in the opening overs. Dean, Nab, Harry and Katie all fell between the 16th and 21st overs but Vipin played skillfully before falling to a fine running catch at mid wicket as he attempted to press on in the 31st over. (106 for 8 from 30.1) Vipin had had a partnership of 22 with Daniel for the 8th wicket. Daniel continued to take scoring opportunities when involved in partnerships of 12 for both the 9th and 10th wickets with Virender and Farhan respectively which took us to 130 all out.
The target for Grange 3rds was 131 at 3.275 an over. Farhan and Daniel opened our attack and kept their openers below that run rate without taking a wicket. Vipin and Kiran came on for the 10th and 11th overs respectively and the latter had the young opener R. Grant caught at the wicket by Nab in his second over. They continued to keep the visiting bats in check while bowling bowl in tandem until 18 overs had been completed. Virender and Katie came into the attack for the 19th and 20th overs at which point we had the second sanitation break. (Grange 3s 55 for 1. Behind the rate but with wickets in hand.) Katie captured our second wicket by bowling the opposing No.3 after 21.3 overs and went on to take the next three wickets to fall in a spell of bowling which was both accurate and tested the batsmen with movement. Captain O. Davies was l.bw. after 27.3 overs, and after 29.1 overs Katie claimed a second leg before victim. This was No. 2 bat A. Campbell who had made 52. Four balls later a sharp catch at short cover by Dean brought Katie her fourth wicket. (Grange 3s 83 for 5 from 29.5 overs. However, veteran Jamie Grant was still at the crease and as a club we had felt the power of his bat in previous seasons.).
Five overs passed and Vipin, who had made a return to the attack, had young No 7 H. Kidd caught by Nab to make the visitors 97 for 6 from 34.5. Jamie Grant lived up to his reputation by hitting Vipin for 6 off the first ball of the 37th over but he fell two balls later when Katie took a catch at point and c. McGill b. Gupta was repeated in the scorebook at the end of the over to make the chasers 110 for 8 from 37. Grange 3s added a total of 9 runs in overs 38 and 39 requiring them to score 12 in the final over to secure the win points. Four balls gave them 6 runs but in an attempt to put their perceived bigger hitter on struck Nab effected a run out and Daniel bowled Catherine Edwards with the final ball of the match. Phew !
During the visitors' innings comparison was being made with a very similar situation in our defeat by Kirk Brae. Smaller score than we had hoped for, a lack of early wickets, which is the usual component of a successful defence of such totals and then taking wickets as our opponents seemed to be moving towards their target. Did that experience help us this time ? We certainly kept our nerve and trusted our methods and in doing so disproved one frequent addage. The one which goes "bat all the overs and you will win."
