Edinburgh South Cricket Club 1st XI v Kirk Brae CC on Wed 28 Jul 2021 at 6pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Edinburgh South won the Terry Newcombe Memorial Trophy by defeating near neighbours Kirk Brae by five wickets with 3.4 overs in hand. A partnership of 68 by Nab Pani and George O'Neill for the third wicket in 10 overs took South to the brink of victory. Nab's innings of 46 in 34 balls with 6 fours and one six earned him tthe accolade of Player of the Match.
On winning the toss Kirk Brae had elected to bat first on a sunny evening at Inch Park. They made a positive start and when they lost their first wicket at the end of the sixth over, Virender Singh bowling M. Rizwan, their score was 29. Kiran Sankaran took the second wicket in the ninth over when he took a catch off his own bowling to dismiss the Badgers captain Sharez Khan. His partnership with G. Singh had added 20. A catch by Farhan Sheikh off Sankara's bowling brought South their third wicket after 10.5 overs and two balls later South captain, Eoghan Forde, trapped G, Singh to make the KB score 55 for 4 after 11.1 overs. South tightened their grip when a run out secured by a combination of O'Neill and Pani was quickly followed by the skipper claiming his second wicket by bowling R. Domadia (59 for 6 from 13.2) and when Russell Barnard returned to the attack he took 2 wickets through catches firstly by Harry Barratt and secondly when Pani took a catch behind the stumps. The keeper also had a hand in the ninth wicket to fall by making a stumping off the bowling of spinner Douglas Blood. Kirk Brae's last wicket pair added 12 runs from the last 13 balls of their innings to give them a final tally of 96 for 9 in their 20 overs.
The Kirk Brae opening attack enjoyed early success in having South 13 for after 3.2 overs but this brought Pani and O'Neill together and their confident batting appeared to be setting up a comfortable victory, However, Pani's dismissal by a catch in the deep after an attempted big hit achieved more height than distance induced an attack of what the late David Kelso or his colleague Willie Dick would surely have described as "the jitters". Pani's partner. O'Neill fell to the last ball of the same 14th over and Paul Reddish to the second ball of the next over. From 82 for 5 Douglas Blood and Kiran Sankaran together took South to our target 18 balls later when the former hitb the winning boundary.
Martin Newcombe, Terry's son, was on hand to present the trophy to Eoghan Forde and there is a photo of that moment on our twitter feed for which thanks go to @Edinburghpotter.
