Match report
Unfortunately this will be a brief match report, not as brief as our batting but not much longer!
Jas won the toss and elected to bowl first as the thinking was the ground would dry out and there would be more value for shots in the second half of the game with a drier outfield.
Raviteja and Aaron opened the bowling, the former bowling with genuine pace, the latter showing that there is still space in the team for dibbly dobbling in-duckers. Baring a couple of no balls (one of which resulted in the best none catch I have ever seen with Rahul taking it down to his right at first slip) Ravi bowled very economically forcing the batsmen to attack at Aaron’s end. Luckily it was brains over brawn and both openers were removed by Aaron with well placed fielding traps bowling to their weaknesses. Raviteja then earnt some reward for a terrific opening spell by removing Peebles number 3 J White.
First change brought on Prab fresh from his 6 wickets the week before and he soon showed why bowling lovely outswingers to remove the Peebles middle order in tandem with Yogi, who bowled very economically at the other end for no reward. Peebles looked to have batted themselves into a hole and this just continued with Shaman and Jas replacing Yogi and Prab to pick up another 2 wickets each before Ravi bowled last man Cummings with the old classic bouncer, bouncer, yorker combo. Peebles bowled out for 101, job done! Or so we thought…
Mohan and Simon opened for South, Simon looked his usually fluid self, Mohan looked his usual swipey self. The outfield unfortunately hadn’t dried as much as South hoped and Mohan was unlucky not to hit a few boundaries in his 10 before being bowled by Haywood. Ian followed soon after pulling a ball that stuck in the pitch to mid wicket. This brought Rahul together with Simon, South in a bit of bother but with arguably our 2 best batsmen at the crease we were still pretty confident. Both knocked it around well and ran well together… until they didn’t… coming back for a quick 2 Rahul slipped on the turn leaving Simon stranded halfway down the pitch to be run out for 14. Rahul followed soon after, with Jas, Shaman and Yogi all falling in the successive overs. Kunal and the tail batted a bit longer but was just facing balls and were unable to score runs, Aaron was last man out for 3, our 9th single digit score of the innings.
A bad day at the office with the bat is the only way to sum it up. We should have chased it down, being hyper critical of the bowling and fielding there were a few too many extras and we could have been a little sharper but you bowl a team out for 101 on Astro turf you are expecting to chase it down, cooler heads at keys points in the batting and a bit more luck (or less ‘un’luck!) would have got us there easily.
A good learning curve, we’ve got Dunniker next week who were also relegated from div 5 last year so another tough game to come.
