Match report
Inch Park CC fall agonisingly short in second cup outing of the season
- In a thrilling encounter, Inch Park CC, the newly adopted midweek moniker of Edinburgh South 2s, suffered a heartbreaking one-run defeat against local rivals Kirk Brae in the Terry Newcombe trophy.
- Despite a dominant performance with the ball, where their opponents were bowled out for just 61 runs, Inch Park’s middle-order collapse costs them victory.
Following a disappointing outing in the Parks Trophy against North Berwick, the newly formed Inch Park CC aimed to bounce back and make an impact in their debut appearance in the Terry Newcombe Trophy. The match held significant importance as it marked the club's return to the tournament after the 1s clinched the title in 2021.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Inch Park displayed their intent from the outset. With just 17 runs conceded in the first six overs, their decision seemed wise. The opening overs were particularly fruitful as Sriram Govindan shattered the stumps of S Khan and I Butt with the first balls of his opening and third overs, respectively.
The excellent start laid the foundation for the seam and spin combination of captain Daniel and deputy Dipen, who bowled in tandem through their allotted overs. Their disciplined bowling resulted in the remarkable combined figures of 5-20 from their eight overs, and a club best of 3-7 for Daniel. Kalyan and Jaskaran also contributed with two-over bursts. Kirk Brae's batting lineup were bundled out for a meagre 61 runs in 19.1 overs, as South conceded just two boundaries in the whole innings.
Chasing a modest target, requiring just over three runs per over, Inch Park's openers, Dipen and Harry, began cautiously but soon accelerated the scoring rate, running between the wickets well, and punishing the loose deliveries on offer.
However, what seemed like a comfortable chase suddenly turned into a nightmare as a flurry of wickets reduced Inch Park from 24-1 to an astonishing 24-6, with Nipun, Yogi, Mohan, and Kunal all departing without troubling the scorers. Despite some resistance from Rod and Daniel, the lower-order batsmen were left with the daunting task of scoring the 22 runs required for victory.
In a valiant effort, Kalyan dished out some lusty blows for four and displayed clever running between the wickets to edge Inch Park closer to the target. Unfortunately, Kalyan fell victim to a well-executed yorker from Kirk Brae's opener, S Khan.
With the match hanging in the balance, Sriram, joined by Jas, battled bravely, guiding the team to a score of 60. However, with just two runs needed for a win and one for a tie, an accurately aimed short delivery resulted in an edge that left Inch Park agonisingly short of the required target.
Overall, it was an enthralling cup-tie on a Tuesday night. They always say the low scoring T20 contests are the most captivating after all.
