Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 3 runs
Match report
As the Women's Challenge League (East) exists to encourage participation this match went ahead with both sides playing with reduced numbers. Aakriti, captaining South, agreed with our oponents that as we had 7 players to their 6 our innings would close with one batter remaining not out while all 6 Stewart's Melville players could bat until they had been dismissed.
South batted first and were given a good start by Isla K and Mia, both of whom retired. Mia, was retired after 8 overs and Isla at the mid-innings point after 10 overs when South were 45 without loss. Two run outs and another wicket plus Aakriti's sefless retirement at rhe end of the 15th over brought back our retired openers who added valuable runs. Isla fell to the penultimate ball of the innings with a score of 31, including 4 boundaries.
The Stew-Mel openers batted in untroubled fashion and had seemed to be setting up a win for their team when both were retired at the end of the 7th over with 43 on the board. Their replacements took the score along until Greta, returning to bowl the third over of her allowance, bowled their No. 3 with the visitor's score at 62 after 10.2 overs. Greta followed this 2 balls later by taking a return catch from the new bat. Marecellina then bowled the No.4 bat early in the next over and after 12.3 overs Mia bowled No. 6 with the score on 70. This meant that both the retired openers were now back at the crease. Thanks to Greta they did not continue with their earlier success. Coming on for her final over she found the edge of their top scorer's bat which was caught by Isla K, who was keeping wicket, and two balls later bowled the number one bat to secure an amazing victory from an unpromising position.
