Stewarts Melville 4ths v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 16 May 2026 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 40 runs
Match report
The unbeaten 4s turned up to Inverleith on a nice enough May Saturday to take on regular opponents Stewarts Melville 4. Konain lost the toss and was put into bat, which he was going to do anyway so the trip out to the middle by the two captains was largely a waste of time. His words.
Rod and Mohan opened the batting but unfortunately Mohan was dismissed lbw for 4 by the 2nd legal delivery of the match, deceived by a good swinging ball. Rod departed in the second over, also lbw to a swinging delivery. Dan and Shaman were both clean bowled leaving us 15-4. Aaron managed some resistance facing 20 balls before being bowled for 1 by a delivery which moved off the seam. 25-5. Graham had been in since the 3rd ball of the innings and had been watching the carnage unfold while failing to add many runs to the total. Keshav came in and things stabilised a bit as the pair got through quite a few overs of what turned out to be the strongest SM bowlers. Keshav was given out lbw just before drinks to leave us 43-6. Certainly below par on a good arti with a fast outfield. After drinks, as news filtered through that Celtic had won the league title with a couple of late goals against Hearts, Graham and Charlie saw off the remaining overs of the strong SM bowlers and were then able to pick up the scoring rate against the change bowlers and Graham brought up his 50 in the 33 over with a boundary. Charlie was caught for 20 shortly after, an excellent partnership of 81 taking us to 124-7 with a chance to post a competitive score. Konain was unlucky to be caught on the boundary after middling a pull with his first ball, bringing Prab (13*) to the crease and his injection of youthful energy along with some good hitting from Graham took us to a respectable total of 173-8. Graham finished on 91*, easily his best score for the club, luckily(?!) the scorers decided against fully operating the electronic scoreboard so he was unaware of how close he was to the milestone.
A quick turn around and the SM openers got off to a good start against Aaron and Charlie, before the left handed Catton swung at one too many and was caught at short third man by Keshav. Konain decided to try some spin from one end and turned to Shafay, this worked out nicely as he got two wickets in his second over, both excellent stumpings by Dan. In an unusual twist the pair dismissed in the same manner in the same over are father and son. Aaron followed up with a wicket in the next over leaving SM at 50-4 after 10. SM steadied the ship a bit and seemed largely satisfied with seeing off Aaron and Shafay while waiting for anything loose. Prab picked up the next wicket, caught again by Keshav in his second over and he got into a rhythm and bowled very well. Konain brought himself on to replace his brother and took an excellent caught and bowled with his first ball. All that was left was for the Ehsan brothers to mop up the tail. Aaron took two catches off Konain and Shafay clean bowled the number 10 before Konain took the final wicket with another stumping by Dan. His third of the game. Konain finished with figures of 4-24.
An excellent win, especially after being 25-5, a good recovery with the bat setting up for an excellent all round bowling performance. Peebles come to visit next week.
