Edinburgh South Cricket Club 5th XI v Old Contemptibles CC on Sat 25 Apr 2026 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 158 runs
Match report
An overcast, blustery day saw the 5XI facing Old Contemptibles in their first league game in Division 8 in the 2026 season. Anticipation was high, as it would be the last game on the old arti, and the 5s were hoping to give it a good send off. OCs won the toss and put us in to bat. Dharmesh and Martin Ali opened the batting, and had a reasonable start against some tight bowling. Arti 2 was playing worse than normal and a number of balls kept low, with the inevitable fall of wickets. Dharmesh was bowled for 8, Gordon caught for 8, Fahad caught for 6, Martin lbw to one for 14 , Gus bowled for 1 and Scott caught for 6. That left the 5s in a tricky situation, at 63-6 in the 18th over. That brought James in, to partner with Shaman. The two dug in, and batted fantastically on a pitch that was still difficult to play on and added 90, with both of them reaching their 50s. Shaman was finally caught for 62 in the 35th over, with the score at 153. Srini was in next and played a great cameo, hitting 20 off 20 balls and with James also accelerating. 55 were added in the last 5 overs, with the score finishing on 216 and James not out on 68. Give the where the 5s were at 20 overs, 73-6, 143 runs in the next 20 overs, was great acceleration and the target was going to be challenging for OCs
By the time OCs started their innings, the sun was shining, hopefully a good sign for the 5s. OCs started brightly, and were on the required rate for the first few overs but wickets fell regularly and at 10 overs they were 40-2, with arguably their best two batters at the crease. But some good bowling from Srini, and Martin Ali, backed up by Hugo, Gus and Scott, saw OCs go from 48-2 to 58ao, giving 5s a win by 158 runs and a fitting send off to the old arti!!
Overall it was a great start to the season. Next week brings a tough game against TPV, who won Division 9 last year, and the game will be on the new arti. Hopefully we can give it a good christening.
