Watsonians 4ths v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 09 May 2026 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost By 139 runs

Match report We went in to this match not knowing what to expect from a Watsonians team containing a mix of adults and juniors, and hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Unfortunately their juniors turned out to be pretty good and we had a tough day. We won the toss and put them in to bat. We started well with some tight bowling from Phil (4-0-15-0) and Martin Ali (8-0-60-0), and they were 42-0 after 10 overs. But they accelerated the rate and we were in need of a wicket, which came in the 18th over, a good ball from Divij got an lbw and they were 96-1. At drinks they were 104-1 and we felt with a few quick wickets we might have a chance. Unfortunately luck wasn’t with us as a number of shots went just beyond fielders or fell short and the game was running away from us. Despite the best endeavours of our bowlers, Dharmesh (7-0-57-2), Gus (4-0-37-0) and Scott (5-1-31-0), they added 96 runs in the next 10 overs for the loss of 2 wickets. We persevered and kept battling in the last 10 overs and slowed the runs down with Martin (4-0-24-1) proving difficult to get away and they finished on 276-4.

We knew that was a tall order so needed a good start, but unfortunately wickets fell regularly as their bowlers got prodigious swing in the overcast conditions, and we found scoring runs difficult, and were 26-4 after 11 overs (Dharmesh 1, Gordon 5, Martin 4, and Divij 0), and had a battle on our hands to get any bonus points for batting. Gordon and Gus stabilised the innings before Gus was bowled for 12, with the score at 45. Phil B was in next and 15 more were added to the score before Gordon W (9) forgot he was playing outdoors and that Cammie wasn’t at the other end and ran himself out, which left us at 60-6 and with Phil G injured. It looked like we weren’t going to get any batting points. Scott was in next and he and Phil dug in and with some lusty hitting from Scott and good running from the pair, put on 56 for the 7th wicket, which took us to 116, before Phil was bowled for 19. Peter was in next and the pair took us past 130, to give us 4 batting points, before Scott was bowled on 41 with the score at 137. Martin (0) was in next and was bowled and we finished on 137, a total that wasn’t looking very likely when we were 6 down.

Overall we were outclassed by a much better team, but fought hard and managed to get to 6 bonus points when that looked very unlikely. Despite the challenges we kept our heads up, and battled right to the end.
