David Templeton aka Temps, Large Bowler

23 Feb 2018

Dave passed away in mid December

He joined our club in 1990 after many years opening the bowling for Boroughmuir in a useful partnership with Gus McLean( who later joined us too)

He came with us on a tour to Scarborough where he scored a fifty and took some wickets

Thereby persuading us that he could be a useful asset -we joked he was joining us on a “free”.

Large bowler soon became an institution within the club not just with his ability but with his numerous sayings which included “time for some grog” ,”what number today skipper”(in an attempt to get up the order)and he’s an utter fanny” the latter fairly extensively applied to opposition and teammates alike. My favourite was when a batsman was proving troublesome to get out ,he would approach me with “time for me to stick it up  his hooter ,skipper”

He first retired in 1996 to look after his wife who suffered from MS.He soon returned to help out the 2nds and 3rds along with his son,Stuart(Trevor)and several times was called into the 1sts when we were short and kept going with his usual commitment and banter until in 2001 playing for the 2’s against Preston Village he felt unwell and decided his time was up as a player( he took 5 wickets in that game)

He was a totally committed player always giving 100% whether batting or bowling and his exuberance and sense of fun were irreplaceable within the club He took 316 wickets for the club (including 9 in oneinnings) as well as contributing useful runs with the bat.Although he joined us in the latter stages of his career ,there were occasions when he was still “a bit rapid”.

A great guy ,great character and one who will be sorely missed not only in cricket circles but also in the Financial services world where he was widely respected.

I hope his son Stuart will keep in touch with the club
