Match report: U14s vs Bass Rock | 11 May 2026

13 May 2026

Edinburgh South Juniors kicked off their Under-14 campaign on 11 May with an exciting and closely contested match against Bass Rock. Opting to bat first, Edinburgh South fielded a strong and well-balanced side featuring a mix of pace and spin options.

Openers Gus and Ali made an immediate impact, with Gus launching an aggressive innings from the outset, striking boundaries with confidence. Ali soon joined in, playing fluently as the pair put the opposition under early pressure. As per league rules, Gus retired after facing 20 balls, having scored an excellent 37, including seven boundaries. Ali continued alongside Abel, who settled in well and showcased his trademark shot-making before Ali retired on 16 in the seventh over, taking the team to a solid platform.

The middle order contributed steadily, with Vihaan scoring 9 before falling to a sharp catch by the Bass Rock keeper. Abel (11) and Reyansh (6) added useful runs before retiring to give others an opportunity. Late contributions from Ebrahim and Shreyas, along with a brief return for Ebrahim at the close, helped Edinburgh South post a competitive total of 99 for 3 from their 16 overs.

With the temperature dropping under a cloudy evening sky, Edinburgh South took to the field. Ali opened the bowling and created an early chance, while Abel struck in the second over to claim the first wicket, leaving Bass Rock at just 4 runs after two overs. The visitors began to build momentum from the third over, but disciplined bowling kept them in check.

Shobha delivered a key breakthrough in the fifth over with a precise delivery, and Vihaan followed up with a wicket in his first over of spin, leaving Bass Rock at 27 for 3 after six overs. Reyansh added another wicket in the 11th over as the match remained finely balanced. Ebrahim bowled with determination, eventually taking a well-deserved wicket after narrowly missing out on the ball before.

The game went down to the final over, with Bass Rock needing five runs from six balls. A dramatic run-out on the penultimate delivery brought the equation down to three required from the final ball. Despite the pressure, the Bass Rock batter found the boundary to seal a narrow victory.

Although Edinburgh South fell just short, it was a fantastic contest full of positives and valuable lessons, particularly around managing bowling resources and limiting extras in key moments. The match featured everything from powerful hitting and tight bowling spells to sharp fielding and a thrilling finish.

Unfortunately, Vihaan sustained an injury while attempting a catch and required first aid and a visit to A&E. Everyone at Edinburgh South wishes him a speedy recovery.

We would also like to thank Bass Rock for travelling and for their excellent sportsmanship, contributing to a highly enjoyable and competitive game of cricket.
