No six in a row for South in East Sixes

04 Apr 2014

In the ESCA Indoor Six-a-side Tournament at Forrester High School Edinburgh South had recorded double victories over Boroughmuir and Murrayfield-DAFS on both 28th February and 28th March to qualify for the Second Semi-Final which was held at the same venue on 4th April. Indeed, at the end of March they had played some superb cricket in the second of the group stage sessions. Our opponents in the penultimate stage were Edinburgh Academicals.

It required some heroics from Matthew Chapman to see us home in this contest after earlier in his innings he had deflected the ball into the region of his eye. South had put Acads in to bat after winning the toss and a wicket each for Ian Astley, Durga, Matthew and skipper Amin after the first wicket had been claimed by means of a run out. A stuttering start was repaired but at 48 for 4 after 5.2 overs it needed some strokes from Matthew, who hit 3 sixes and a four and solid defence by Durga to take us over the line but we were played five won five for the tournament.

In the Final we faced defending champions Marchmont who had also won in 2012. In their Semi they had played with efficiency and confidence to overcome the Edinburgh Schools team. As in our Semi, Amin called correctly and elected to bowl. We made a good start with Amin and Ian both claiming a wicket in the opening two overs but their stout blows and our gift of extras helped the holders to move forward. Durga and Matthew helped us regain the initiative with wickets in the sixth and seventh overs but intelligent batting in the remaining overs saw the Cavalry Park side go from 58 for 4 to 79 all out.

Abhishek and Ian made a promising start but after the former was caught off the side wall (21/1) run outs played a part in a slump to 50 all out. Thus South did not make it six wins in a row and congratulations are due to Marchmont for a Six-a-side Trophy hat trick.
