Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI v Glenrothes 3rds on Sat 26 Apr 2014 at 1 p.m.
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by two wickets

Match report A heavy and prolonged downpour on Friday night/Saturday morning left this game in some doubt, especially as many other games in the league were being called off. However the brand new pitch and artificial wicket stood up to the weather very well with only a couple of small puddles next to the track.

The late arrival of the Glenrothes team and some ominous clouds led to the game being shortened to 35 overs per side. Glenrothes won the toss and sensibly opted to bowl. Some accurate bowling from the Glenrothes bowlers mean that scoring opportunities for Calum and Ross were limited. Calum's was the first wicket to fall with the score at 18. This led to the traditional Edinburgh South collapse and in the blink of an eye the score was 24-6. Fortunately Ross was still at the crease and his steady batting coupled with Sunny's more cavalier approach moved the score on, this was followed by an excellent 15* from Ian Irving who sees himself as a batsman these days and a brave 0 from Ian Ross who, with a broken thumb, could barely hold the bat. We ended on 85 with Ross top scoring with 26 and Sunny with 24. It could have been a LOT worse.

The Glenrothes innings began with an awful runout with both opening batsmen standing at the non strikers end allowing Ross to casually roll the ball to keeper Naresh to whip the bails off. The victim of the runout was not at all happy with his batting partner, I suspect he is still fuming. Adam and Ian restricted the scoring and Adam took two wickets in his spell, one caught at mid on by Vishal and one caught at slip by Ian Irving. At drinks Glenrothes were only 3 wickets down and the captain took the inspired decision of bringing on wicketkeeper Rahul to bowl. Rahul proceeded to take 3 wickets in his first over to bring the game back into the balance. Ian Irving was brought back on for his final two overs and took a wicket and Dominic removed opposition captain Gould, caught by Graham at short midwicket. Glenrothes were ultimately seen over the line by some watchful batting by Malcolm Neil who was happy to block Rahul's overs and look to score runs at the other end.

A close game in which the difference between victory and defeat was the batting collapse and the number of extras conceded. A good game though played in good spirits with surprisingly good weather! Special mentions to Ross for holding the batting together, Sunny for scoring some quick runs, Adam, Ian Rahul and Dom for some excellent bowling which wasn't always fully rewarded and to Ian Ross for turning up, batting and even attempting a catch while nursing a broken thumb.
