Match report
Keen cricketers always look forward to their next game, and your correspondent is no exception. But today, when a cold north east wind had already deposited a layer of mist on top of Arthur’s Seat before our game started, he may not have been alone in thinking that the best kind of match would be a quick one. For once he was not disappointed.
Adam Smith captained ESCC3s this time, and he chose to bowl first - personally as well as collectively. Both sides had ten players to start with, so Harry Barratt fielded – very well - until Ross completed our team, after coming straight from work as arranged. Adam and Dom’s opening attack kept an accurate line, well pitched up, and several balls kept low. They both proved difficult to get away, as the ball was swinging in the breeze. Both beat the bat, before Dom struck in the fourth over to get rid of Ken Hutchison for just 1. KH had batted belligerently in our recent defeat to CCCC2s by 2 runs, so we were encouraged by this early dismissal. Our pair proceeded to trade wickets, as 4 for 1 became 8 for 4 after eight overs. Adam then produced a purple patch of 4-4-0-4, to complete his full analysis of 7-5-5-5 – his first five wicket haul. CCCC2s’ innings evaporated against this onslaught, collapsing to just 15 all out. Dom’s 3 for 7 would have been headline news any other day.
We agreed to turn round quickly to finish the match. However we soon had our own alarms, as three wickets fell within eight balls, all with the score on 9. Karamjit then struck a good boundary, before Ross completed the victory.
Adam needed little encouragement to bowl himself and Dom unchanged until the job was done. I’m sure if the positions had been reversed, CCCC2s would have taken the same approach in a league setting. Our opponents were very sporting in defeat, and they will bounce back. We look forward to our trip to The Arns later in the summer.
Some statto curiosities: * when ESCC3s bowled, more than half the overs were maidens – 8 out of 15, pretty uncommon these days. * the top individual score in the match was just 4. * no batsman had more than two scoring shots. * only four players in the whole match managed even that.
