Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 5 runs
Match report
An average breezy afternoon turned into a cloudless evening by the end of this epic encounter at Inverleith Park.
Paul Bailey captained HX3s, instead of scoring for their 1st eleven, but they still only had nine players – that is, until they “spotted a familiar face, sitting on an Inverleith Park bench with a carry-out, in Matthew Cunningham”. (He only dominated their innings – but read on.) HX3s won the toss, and asked us to bat. Brad anchored the innings at one end, while Rahul and Karamjit ticked the score along. 71 for 2 at half way was steady progress. After Brad departed for 18, Sabu and Jim added 55 for the fourth wicket. Sabu top scored with 49, including 2 powerful sixes and 5 fours, before being our third run out victim – testament to HX3 youngsters’ speed and strong throwing, as well as at least one failure on our part to ground the bat. Dom (14*) and Owen (9) then played positively and ran well, adding 18 in just three overs towards the end. At the break, we felt that 151 for 6 should be enough.
The two HX3 youngsters opened, with Reekie blasting 15 in no time, out of 16, when Brad held a juggling catch at mid on, off Dom’s bowling. Egerton-King, the other school boy, retired on 14, as he was expected elsewhere, soon followed by two cheap dismissals – one each for Dom and Adam. By this time Mr Cunningham had announced his arrival with some bold strokes, helping HX3s past 50 – albeit with effectively four down – in the eleventh over: contrast that with ESCC3’s 29 for 1 at the same stage. With Cunningham “hitting the ball for fun”, we soon realised that he needed to be contained. So we spread the field to give him ones, and then looked to pick off the other batsmen. Although Cunningham went on to make a classy 78* out of around 100 while he was in, Messrs Graham and Bailey offered stubborn resistance for a while, before Karamjit bowled them both. Then senior citizen Russell Eberst arrived on the scene. Before long he “hit the ground in dramatic circumstances after twirling round like a spinning top attempting to play a Dodson dolly.”
Cricket became irrelevant as soon as Russell’s head hit the ground, bouncing his glasses a few feet away. He must have seen a few stars while he was out for the count, but fortunately Doctor Jim McLaren and others quickly attended to him, eventually restoring him to his feet, to be helped away for a seat. Keith Geddes, another seasoned campaigner, then played a few aggressive shots, bringing HX3s much closer to their target with plenty of overs to spare. But he succumbed to a catch by some old leftie at deep mid off, giving Dom his third wicket. Gerry’s slower ball still occasionally packs a punch, and accounted for Tantum, before Russell Eberst bravely returned to the fray as last man. Another lethal dolly induced another unsuccessful pirouette by our star performer, whose second fall was fortunately a much more controlled affair. Meanwhile the ball ignored him and found its target, to complete a 5 run win.
This match finished in a feeling of relief all round, never mind the result.
The above “quotations” are lifted from HX website, hopefully with retrospective acquiescence if not prior permission.
