Match report
Has summer arrived? We had a day of fluctuating cloud, a pleasant breeze and spells of warm sunshine for this mid table clash.
Despite late calls to the 2s, who were playing on the main pitch beside us, Adam had no hesitation in opting to bowl first with the team one short. Owen’s mum stayed just long enough to see her 13 year old’s early success, trapping Eddie Gibbs lbw in his first over. Bod Hutchison then seized the initiative with some impressive positive batting. His decisive calling and rapid running with Burton turned several ones into twos – a lesson for us all. But Bod fell lbw to Rahul for 29, trying to flick one too many off his legs. 49 for 2 in the 13th over. After that, Ian Green’s 24 anchored the remaining scoring by GCC4s, with some brief energetic assistance from Holly Wilkinson. The collapse which followed owed much to the pressure built up by repeated deliveries just outside off stump from Shine, Rahul and particularly Sabu, which failed to get tickled behind to the expectant keeper Jim. Sabu then produced the startling figures of 5-4-1-5, the one run being a wide in his first over – a marvellous effort. Owen claimed a second wicket to top and tail proceedings, as 83 for 3 degenerated to 94 all out, setting us a very reasonable target.
Rahul (12) outscored Brad in ESCC3s’ opening stand of 17, then Gareth and Owen successively provided good support as Brad’s confidence grew after a slow start. He sensibly waited for the right ball to attack, and punished those with improving footwork and growing authority. His 48 contained 8 fours, and only ended when he walked for a nick behind off Bod Hutchison. Bod was the pick of GCC4s’ bowlers, with 3 for 16. Shine (14*) completed the job quickly, lifting successive deliveries for a one bounce four, then a big six, to level the scores. Jim’s 0* at the other end doesn’t look much in the book, but was the solid contribution needed to settle things after three quick wickets had fallen just beforehand.
Sabu and Brad are our obvious headline makers in this good win. But everyone played their part in the ten man effort, which brings ESCC3s closer to the mix for promotion, as the business end of the season approaches.
