Edinburgh South Cricket Club 3rd XI v Holy Cross 3rds on Sat 04 Jul 2015 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
The rain came on Friday night and continued until about 10am Saturday morning, but the Inch looked surprisingly dry. A good go with the sopper removed the puddle that had formed by the astroturf wicket and to the surprise of almost everyone we were able to go ahead only slightly delayed. This was helped by Holy Cross being a local side who were happy to leave it until the last minute accepting the possibility of a late call off.
It was not a good toss to lose. But I did lose it. Alex Candlish asked us to bat.
Just as we were ready to start, fielders in position bowler at the top of his run up, Brad realised he was wearing his spikes (why was he wearing spikes at all?!) and had to run off and change them. He was then dismissed at the end of the first over without troubling the scorers. A true Edinburgh South batting collapse occurred, with Rahul, Karamjit Andy Barker and Sabu all following Brad back to the hutch. 12-5 was not looking good. Shine and I then put on 30 for the 6th wicket, running some good quick singles until Shine, understandably embarrassed at being out scored in this partnership attempted to send a ball from Geddes over cow corner but missed and was bowled off his pads. 42-6. Jim and Prabhneet were bowled in consecutive balls but Kevin managed to dig out the hattrick ball to deny McMonagle. I then got a leading edge to a Geddes delivery which was caught at point and Adam chipped one back to the same bowler on his first ball. All out for 45. Oh dear.
Credit to McMonagle, Kapp and Geddes, all of whom bowled really well, but with 1 or 2 exceptions all the batsmen got out doing something a little silly.
Embarrassingly the 1st XI were bowled out at almost exactly the same time on the main square
We didn't bother with tea. Sabu and Adam opened the bowling. Sabu struck in his first over, clean bowled. 6-1. Adam then got the second wicket in his second over. 17-2. Sabu then got an lbw to make it 25-3 bringing the dangerous Andy Graham to the crease. He attempted his trademark swipe and was bowled first ball. 25-4. Surely not? 4 wickets then fell, 2 each for Adam and Sabu, for the loss of just one run leaving Holy Cross in all sorts of trouble on 29-8. McMonagle came in and steadied things hitting 15 runs, one wonders why he was batting at 10, albeit at least two of his boundaries were edges past slip. Just as it looked safe for Holy Cross he was bowled by Sabu. Holy Cross needed 1 to tie or 2 to win with a nervous looking Geddes out to bat. the first ball of Adam's over hit captain Candlish on the pad and while we appealed in vain (I didn't I thought it was high) the ball ran away to the boundary to give Holy Cross the win by one wicket. Ridiculously good bowling from Adam and Sabu almost almost got us there but not quite. If only we'd scored a few more runs...
A ridiculous game of cricket where 19 wickets fell for just 93 runs and over 30% of those runs were scored by one batsman. Extras was surprisingly quiet today scoring just 1 for us and 6 for HX (of which 4 were the aforementioned leg byes.
