Leith FAB CC v Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 07 May 2016 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Lost by 8 Wickets

Match report Can we just pretend this never happened? *sigh*

Well, it went as well as the scorebook shows. What is really a very strong seconds team were outclassed by Leith (typing that was painful) ...I'd love to channel the Incredible Hulk and just bash the keyboard for the rest of this but you deserve some sort of summary I guess.

The pitch was being worked on when we arrived. A series of new drains left trenches that resembled Europe circa 1914-18 in areas but someone Leith managed to get the show going!

Adam promptly lost the toss (Tails Adam! Always tails!!!) and we went out to bat.

The pitch did some odd things throughout. 1 ball would skiff your nose and the next break your ankle after pitching similar area. Not an excuse at all but batsmen claim that affects them...divas...

Shah opened and was a handful. Good pace, nice lines and made Welsh and Ian Ross (IR from now on...2 first names in your name make this really annoying!) work for their opening. Lawson at the other end was pick of the bowlers from either side hands down. Outstanding bowling throughout. He kept it tight just hit the right areas.

It was obvious early on this would be low scoring. The ball was slow in the outfield and the pitch made timing shots tricky. However, the openers muddled on to get to 26 without loss at the 9th over. Very respectable in the circumstances.

In the 10th over Welsh tried a nice shot over point but it didn't have the height and he was caught. It was a steady innings for 7 and he didn't look troubled by the pace of Shah but Lawson's accuracy was the key, just frustrating enough and tempting Welsh with a loose ball.

Andy Barker took to the crease. The start was a bit like the first few minutes of Bambi on ice as he found his feet but some solid defensive work started to creep in. He enjoyed facing the pace and just played safe once in holding an end. That left IR to steadily build his innings and, he looked comfortable. Leith were very sharp in the field. Nothing past the fielder often and they were positioned well to shut down scoring areas.

In the 13th over at 30-1 IR departed. Second victim of Lawson. Honestly, the accuracy would put a bowling machine to shame. Caught by Siddiqui for 13 in a steady innings playing the right shots and looking for the loose ball (there really wasnt many).
Roshan was bowled in the next over. Ali's ball pitch outside leg and cut back to remove leg stump. Tremendously unlucky in all honesty. Next up was Barker for Lawson's 3rd and final wicket. It was an LBW, correct call and he left for 1. He looked like holding out and seeing off Lawson but just fell short but did well overall.

As you can see its gone a bit wrong by now. 16th over we added 2 runs for 3 wickets. Not a great ratio really and it gets worse...
Ali tore through our batting line up ending with 6 wickets. He was steady, a bit more wayward that Shah and Lawson but a mix of movement of the ball and building pressure was our undoing.
Only IR got into double figures, Welsh and Ash got 5 and 7 respectably. Even extras just crept into the double figures with 11 in total. We lost a wicket in every over from 14 to 19 with Ali nearly getting a hat trick.
Ash was last to depart scoring South's only 4 of the innings.

Pub? No? Fine...

44 to defend. It isn't much but we were fired up.

Can't fault the effort in the field. Adam dropped one (obviously) but Graham shown how it’s done with a terrific catch in cover to dismiss Dicks for 1 giving Ash his wicket. Roshan bowled Heinitz the following over after some good variation bowling.

In the 7th over the comeback was on! 7-2 Leith stood after some very tight bowling. The pace troubled the batsmen but Leith could defend all day and just pick a bad ball. Had we got to 100 I'm sure a few more wickets would be down by this point and we'd have forced the issue more. Sadly, life is cruel and that didn't happen.

Davies and Siddiqui came to the crease and seen off Roshan and Ash. Then, annoyingly, moved up through the gears and went for Irving and Adam to finish things by the 17th over. It could have taken longer but Adam bowled 3 full tosses at Siddiqui's pads in the 17th. He must have been in shock as he missed the first 1 then clubbed a 6 ruining the ball as brick is clearly harder than leather. With scores tied Siddiqui taken the 3rd gifted ball smashing 4 to end the game.

Irving bowled well getting a well-deserved maiden to open. Sadly, there wasn't enough runs on the board to do much with.

Again, middle innings collapse hurt South. Hopefully we can solve the issue as its getting repetitive and was as horrible to write about as play in.

Only getting 1 bonus point is the biggest issue. Throughout the season we need to be getting 5 points minimum per game, although winning would preferable!
Hopefully this is just a blemish and a predictor for the season.
