Match report
It’s an odd tale this week.
We start with the only negative, everything before we started playing! Up until Friday night we had to seriously consider cancelling the third 11 fixture as it was roughly 7 players each for 2 and 3’s. Through absolutely outstanding work by Bill and Ian Ross we got 10 for the seconds and extra players for the 3rd team to give each team a chance. They do this kind of thing every week and ask for no praise but they deserve it. Without this background work we would not play, it’s that simple.
Massive changes, again, this week. From the prior week vs Tranent Captain Adam Smith, Graham Smith, Peter Fyfe and, fresh from his 3 catches the prior week, now wicketkeeper Ross Welsh.
Top run scorer for the seconds Rahul Dhar returned with Bradley Bonthrone who is gaining experience and runs at this level. Roshan changed shifts to play which is amazing commitment and to have his experience is massive for a team without much experience at this level. Swing king Dom Dobson came back into the side and the maestro Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Smith came out of a 5-year retirement to bulk the numbers.
The main addition to the team turned out to be young Owen Gorman! The 14 year olds name comes up a lot here and we can always look back at his debut in Division 4 here when he’s off to better things like international cricket!
To continue the trend of the season we lost the toss. Dunfermline decided to bat and started quickly. Owen troubled the openers to no end, which was good as I started slowly at the other end. Sadly, due to age, Owen had to come off after 4 overs and only gave away 12 runs and included a maiden. It was exceptional bowling varying height and angling the ball across the right handers. At the other end Adam gave 10 in his over but recovered to give 17 in his first 5 overs. Sadly, we didn’t do enough to get a wicket early on.
Roshan and Dom were the change. Miller and Spreng were very happy to defend the good balls and score when they could. Anything full was dispatched by 2 very classy batsmen. Dom, like Owen, was awesome. He bowled very tight giving away 9 in 5 overs after starting with a maiden. He’s a player who, if he backs himself at this level, could be very deadly and shut down a lot of attacks. Even he returned at the death he continued his form giving just 27 in total against very good batsmen.
Brad and Eddie bowled well with Eddie giving away only 12 in 3 over. After a 5 year break most people would take that! The first wicket went the way of Rahul in his first over getting Miller for 99. Graham Smith pulled off a great catch in the deep to adjust and take the ball without a fuss at all. Rahul ended on 1-10 in 3 overs. Our other wicket went to rising star Owen. A well-pitched ball was hit in the air to Rahul at midwicket. His celebration was youthful excitement and perked us all up as Dunfermline were running away with it a bit. The second wicket fell in the 31st over with Dunfermline on 185. They powered on and ended on 246 as they hit out with Busby getting 40 in 9 overs. Sullivan made a good cameo for Dunfermline with a solid 40 also in the 15 overs at the crease. Spreng opened and was not out in the 40th which is some doing. Class batting by him for 51, which he gained in the last over.
With a big total to chase we had a very amicable tea with Dunfermline, it was a very pleasant game on the whole. Graham and Brad wanted to open the batting as they had to get away early. Both hit the ground running with South reaching 22 in the 6th over when Graham departed. Attempting one big shot too many he was bowled after 3 consecutive 4s. His sprint off the park was the fastest anyone moved all day! Welsh came in and was steady as always with some nice shots. Brad departed for 12 and Welsh ended on 9, unjust for both but good fielding prevented more.
Rahul and Roshan hit a quick 12 and 13 respectively and Peter Fyfe was joined by debutant Owen at the crease. Fyfe was run out for 2 as we went from 30-1 to 78-6 as we ran up the runs quickly. Sadly, we lost a wicket in each of the 16, 17 and 18th overs but kept it going. A bit of rain delay didn’t stop play for long though and in the 20th over Owen was joined by Adam at the crease. It didn’t look good…I’m not exactly renowned for sensible batting so the 14-year-old was in charge! Talk about pressure on the young man…
\Adam started out looking like a number 11 (thanks for that observation Dom) but settled and started to play some actual shots on his way to a career best 38. A few tickles past leg slip and 7 4’s kept the score going before trying a cover drive too many over the fielder and being caught.
Meanwhile, Owen was amazing. Shots in every direction and calling for runs. He shown maturity far beyond his years and didn’t look troubled at all. He was looking for a run all the time and talked from the second I got to the crease and kept reminding me to get to the batting points “then we can go for it”. Reminder, he’s 14…
The sensible batting from Owen and Adam (who is never batting number 11 again Ian Ross!) formed a partnership of roughly 90 runs! The seconds put on a 90ish run partnership and Adam was involved. I’ll wait a minute while you all compose yourselves and stop laughing at that.
Dom came in and hit some cracking shots. Eddie decided to field 1 for Dunfermline at the non-striker’s end though. Dom got 10 and Eddie hit 3 meaning no player got a duck as we ended on 191 in 38 overs.
This was an absolutely phenomenal performance. A full strength seconds team gave away 314 on this pitch last season. This was amazing to be a part of. We weren’t far off this. 55 runs sound a lot but, honestly, this felt gettable until the 32nd over. Everyone contributed. Everyone enjoyed it. Everyone should be damn proud of this performance.
Man of the Match: It should be everyone but it’s going to Owen. I can’t not. This is his level.
