Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI v Preston Village on Sat 16 Aug 2014 at 1 p.m.
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 43 runs
Match report
Neil Leitch, Leader of Scotland's Scorers, acted as a guest scorer for the Seconds in this match. He, together, with the visiting scorer, Gary Wickstead, made the decision to re-locate the scoring position to the westmost bench on the southern boundary. It was a wise move as the scores had some shelter from the strong south-westerly wind which swept the playing area.
Having been put into bat Sohail was dismissed after 4.4 overs but Brendon played determindly on a slow pitch and similar outfield for a 65 ball 38 (1 x 4 1x 6) before being run out by a direct hit. A little later Luke was stumped and this brought together Durga and Musa with the score on 81 for 4 from 21.5 overs. (A decent position but one which we know can subside to 125 or fewer.)
However there was to no such slump this time as Durga played with purpose from the outset and after some early playing and missing Musa settled in to score fluently in an undefeated partnership of 103 for the fifth wicket in 83 minutes.
Luke, the skipper was well pleased with the final total of 184 for 4.
Musa and Maneesh bowled accurately in the opening 10 overs of the Villagers innings when the ball moved off the seam and although neither claimed a wicket in this period they restricted the openers to 14 runs. Luke replaced Musa and struck with the final ball of his third over. (25 for 1 from 15 overs.)Heavy rain drove the teams from the field for 20 minutes (62/1 from 26.3) by which time Brendon and Durga formed the attack. Soon after the resumption Maneesh clung on to a hard hit drive at mid off to give the Durga the first of three wickets. This was the only catch of the innings; the six other dismisals were bowled. Brendon acounted for Preston's main batting hope Shiraz Ramzan (37 with 3 fours) and from there, apart from a late flourish when we had some problems with the wet ball and slippery outfield, we maintained the control which our solid batting and miserly early bowling had given us.
