Edinburgh South Cricket Club Mitres v Edinburgh University Ladies on Sun 20 Apr 2014 at 1 p.m.
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report
Edinburgh University Ladies CC found a deceptive blue sky and a chilly NE wind at Inch Park. The Ladies won the toss, and chose to bat first.

Their openers Oliver and McGill prospered as the new ball came onto the bat, making 34 for the first wicket, before Andrew Barrie removed both in his second over. From then on, no other partnership bettered half the openers’ effort, as slower bowling proved harder to score from, frequently keeping low on the early season wicket. Ross Henderson bowled very steadily, with generous flight and good control, deserving more than his one wicket. Gerry bowled four victims in succession, before Adam dismissed number 11, a handsome fair-haired youth - whose throwing arm would be the envy of anyone in ESCC, but whose indiscriminately aggressive batting attitude hinted more to this seasoned correspondent of the young gentleman’s likely testosterone level amongst his fair teammates than of his innings building pedigree! No less than 40% of the Ladies’ total of 94 was extras, including many wides. Of course this was an opportunity for various bowlers to get early season exposure, but we should try hard through practice to limit this type of unintended gift to future opponents.

In our reply, the innings was led by Ross Welsh, whose 55 not out, including six fours, was a great example to us of careful defence against the straight ball, while waiting to take advantage of loose offerings. The first wicket put on 42 before Bradley fell lbw for 13 – a steady knock supporting the man in form. Paul succumbed early, then Victor made a confident 10 before being stumped – a lesson our recruit from the world of baseball will take on board. Claire played sensibly, letting Ross guide us to victory.

This pleasing win was also played in the right friendly spirit. One of the Ladies’ dads umpired the first innings, despite being about to drive back home to Liverpool after the weekend here – a fine effort.
