Edinburgh South Cricket Club 2nd XI v Tranent & Preston Village 3rds on Sat 26 May 2018 at 1pm
Edinburgh South Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report After South had lost in both cups to Tranent & PV, it really felt like we were due a win. We started the day with a couple of abnormalities - a sunny day at Inch Park, and we won the toss! Fielding first was the call and then a mad dash to get ready.

We fielded a strong team and went in full of confidence. Kshitiz started the match as he aimed to go on, bowling tight and testing the batsmen with every delivery. He ended the first over with a maiden, one of four by Kshitiz and nine for the team as a whole. Owen at the tree end complimented Kshitiz well. His angles and accuracy kept the score low and brought our first wicket in the 4th over, a catch behind for Karamjit Singh off an edge as he had the batsman fishing. The tandem kept the score down to 21 after 10 overs but the 2 wickets between them was scant reward for such an outstanding spell.

Cricket is about partnerships. The bowling partnership is the most underrated of those, and we used it to devastating effect today. Our second pairing, Prabhneet and Rahul, started where Owen and Kshitiz finished: with tight lines and containing the batsmen. Prabhneet got just reward for so many near edges with a wicket maiden in his 3rd over, bowling the impressive Black. Rahul went up a gear the following over, getting his first wicket of 4, bowling one batsman each over and being very unlucky not to bowl out the rest!

Harry Barratt was brimming with confidence as he opened his spell. His three opening overs ended with just 2 runs off them, including a maiden in the third. The ball moved at will, and he make the batsmen work hard. Rahul’s catch brought Harry his wicket and, like every bowler today, was unlucky not to get more. As he tormented the Tranent batsmen Harry decided to set up with three slips and a gully. Twice the ball fell just short of the cordon. Gerry Dodson and Vinay Kumar finished things off. Gerry appeared to take a wicket with his first ball, but immediately declared it a no-ball himself, as it bounced twice before reaching the batsman then rolled under his bat to the stumps! He started his third over with the last wicket, so I’d like to count it as a wicket maiden! His figures of 1-4 show just how well he bowled. Vinay only got one over, but it was excellent, bowling Griffiths with his first legitimate delivery, and ending with 1-2.

After a solid batting display the previous week, Harry opened again. Jeremy joined him at the crease and the pair set off at pace, getting us to 17 in 4 overs before Jeremy was bowled by a ball that held up in the pitch. Karamjit came out and didn’t hang about either, with a boundary for his first scoring shot. The trio of Harry, Jeremy and Karamjit are the 2s' top scorers this season by some distance. It’s up to the rest of the team to take the pressure a bit in future games, no matter how well they are batting up top.

Boundaries became the order of the day, as Harry hit three fours in successive deliveries and eight in total, taking full advantage of the fast dry outfield. Jeremy’s runs came from a four, and Karamjit hit three more, as they took what chances were offered and batted solidly when needed. By the 12th over the win was in sight. Harry, not knowing he was on 46 not out, told Karamjit to take chances if there. A full toss on leg stump was smashed for four on the 1st ball of the 13th over to end proceedings and give us a fully deserved win.

Tranent & PV were very good to play against and we had an enjoyable game, minus a few locals trying to get involved. The bowling partnerships cannot be underestimated, and the fielding support was excellent. The three opening batsmen were excellent as usual, and we all have to raise our game to that level to compete weekly.

Harry Barratt: What can you say, after his 46no and the sheer domination of batsmen by throwing half the team into the slip cordon - makes you wonder what he will do in years to come.

Jeremy Blood: steady head, good diplomat and he batted coolly, keeping the young man grounded in the tricky opening spell.

Karamjit Singh: Rename him “The Wall”. Nothing passes this keeper, even when he bats, as the bowlers found out!

Omkar Dhawde: A player of Omkar’s class only getting mentioned now shows you the sheer performance levels all round. A constant voice lifting the team, good ideas and always smiling! His experience was invaluable.

Owen Gorman: His bowling is getting ever more consistent, which massively adds to his variation and movement. This young man is going to be a fixture at a higher level sooner rather than later.

Rahul Naresh: His bowling was superb. 4 wickets, all bowled, could have had more.

Vinay Kumar: a wide and then a wicket, he knows how to lull a batsmen into a false of security! Movement with the ball, good flight. There will be more to come this season from Vinay and I’d expect more wickets.

Kshitiz Tiwari: If he opens the bowling with 1-5 with 4 maidens every week we will all have to up our game! He deserved more wickets and how the batsmen kept the edge of the bat away from the ball is anyone's guess.

Prabhneet Singh: Bowled superbly and it was really difficult to take him off the over after a wicket maiden! He should be challenging for top wicket taker for the 2’s this season.

Gerry Dodson: Phantom wicket with his first ball, gave away 4 runs in 2.1 overs and changed length, flight and pace to keep batsmen unsettled. His advice to the young bowlers was key.

Adam Smith: You guys have ruined my 0% win rate with the 2s...I don’t know how to feel...
